Royal Palms Shuffleboard Opening Pushed Back To Summer

The good news? Demolition has begun and design renderings for the Gowanus venue look fantastic.

Brooklyn will have to wait just a little bit longer to break out the biscuits and tangs.

Though originally scheduled for an April debut, the renovation work inside of 514 Union Street—site of the future Royal Palms Shuffleboard Parlor—had to push back its schedule due to various setbacks.

"We just started construction this past Thursday," says co-owner Jonathan Schnapp. "And 'construction' is a generous term for it because it's really demolition. But I'm just so happy to be moving forward!"

There will likely be a few small private events in June before the interior is completed, Schnapp says. But owners anticipate the grand opening will now take place in July.

Carroll Gardens Patch was given a peek at floorplans and renderings for the 17,000-square-foot future game club, however, and can confirm that they look spectacular.

Think "70s Florida with pre-Castro Cuba and a little Wes Anderson on top," describes Schnapp, whose designers have previously worked on André Balasz properties like The Standard Hotel.

The inspirational themes will translate into sunken shuffleboard courts, private modular cabanas, a whitewashed exposed beam ceiling, potted palm trees and other surprises. Colors will focus primarily on cool ocean blues, whites and natural woods.

Vintage shuffleboard gear from longstanding Floridian clubs will also make an appearance in the form of biscuit baskets swapped with Royal Palms. Will the older baskets rub off good luck on future players? You'll have to play to find out.

But until then, shuffleboard enthusiasts can get a small taste of what's to come by venturing to the Gowanus Nite Market this weekend.

"We're going to set up a roll-out shuffleboard court and maybe host a mini tournament," says Schnapp.

Polo shirts entirely optional.
