Police Blotter: Post-Sandy Crime Roundup

Burglaries, stolen cars and robberies in the 76th Precinct


In the first seven days following Hurricane Sandy, the NYPD made 123 storm-related arrests citywide, with 54 for burglary and 41 others stemming from disputes in gas lines, according to police. 

Though the 76th Precinct did not suffer a heavy string of crime in the storm aftermath, of the incidents that occurred in Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Red Hook, at least one was an example of thieves preying upon an individual who had left his home during the evacuation of Zone A.

Red Hook Home Ransacked

An evacuated home suffered a burglary on Visitation Street between Van Brunt and Richards Streets in Red Hook, according to police. At some point between Sunday, October 28 at 2:30 p.m and Saturday, November 3 at 1:40 p.m. unknown individuals entered through a second-floor apartment window and removed various belongings from the tenant, who was not at home. Items taken include two PC Dell Inc. workstations ($4,400). The victim is a male, 54. He reported the crime on November 5.

Car Disappears From Union Street

A 1996 Acura Integra disappeared from the corner of Union and Hicks Streets, according to cops. On Saturday, November 3 at 10 a.m. the owner parked parked and locked vehicle at that location. But when he returned to it on Sunday, November 4 at 12 p.m. it was gone. The hard-top, two-door grey vehicle ($2000) left no debris or broken glass where it went missing. The victim is a male, 27.

Man Assaulted During Robbery

While walking on Thursday, November 1 at 8:25 p.m., a man was the victim of robbery at the intersection of Henry Street and Atlantic Avenue, cops said. The victim was approached by an individual requesting money. When he did not immediately receive it, the thief then repeatedly struck the victim, 29, with a closed fist to the face, causing swelling, redness and bruising. Police were alerted to the crime and arrested 28-year-old John Smith at 8:38 p.m. at the same location.

Hold-up on Hicks Street

A robbery took place at the corner of Baltic and Hicks Streets, according to police. On Thursday, October 25 at 10:35 p.m., man was walking to a bus stop when he was approached by men in front of him. One of the assailants had a semi-automatic firearm, which he pointed at the victim's head. The thief said, "Gimme your wallet!" as the second male slapped the victim in the head. The pair removed the victim's property then fled on foot, southbound on Hicks Street, cops said. The victim is male, 26. One suspect is described as male, black, approximately 32, and wearing corn rows. The second male was also black, age 30, and wearing black pants and a black top. Items taken include a black Louis Vuitton wallet ($600), $350 in cash, and two credit cards. No arrests have been made at this time.

Woman Beaten and Robbed By Boyfriend's Sister

On Saturday, November 3 at 10 p.m. on Columbia Street between Delevan and Verona Streets, a 48-year-old woman reportedly went to visit her boyfriend at his apartment. Once she was inside the home, the boyfriend’s sister and another female allegedly walked into the bedroom and proceeded to punch the victim in the face, said police. The attackers then took the victim’s wallet and jewelry. The two suspects are both described as black females, ages 36 and 58, respectively. Items stolen include a diamond wedding ring ($1,000), fox coat ($1400), and $100 in cash. No arrests have been made at this time.
