The shelter, which is operated by the Institute for Community Living (ICL) and had suffered damage as a result of the hurricane, was deemed safe by the Department of Buildings Nov. 15.

"When ICL was originally relocated to West 9th Street due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy on their Borden Avenue facility, we were told that they were expecting to be in the space for 'less than a month' - 10 days later they are now moving out," said Craig Hammerman, district manager of CB 6.

Peter Campanelli, founding president and CEO of ICL, thanked Carroll Gardens elected officials and neighbors for their generosity and support of the veterans, saying, "We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and applaud your spirit of giving, especially to our veterans who are used to being the ones to serve others."

Hammerman noted that the Department of Homeless Services has not yet projected a date for any new occupancy of the West 9th space, and said CB 6 will update the community as it receives new information.
