Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz Honors LICH Nurses

He announced his proclamation at a Nurses Week luncheon at the hospital, sponsored by the New York State Nurses Association.

Sixteen years after the inaugural Brooklyn Nurses Week was launched at a rally for LICH nurses in 1997, hospital staff were celebrated again on Friday for winning an important victory in the fight to save their Cobble Hill hospital.

“On behalf of all Brooklynites, I solute and commend the dedicated nurses of LongIsland College Hospital and the great borough of Brooklyn and beyond,” read Marty Markowitz in his Proclamation. “And I thank them for all that they do to enhance thequality of life for all patients…”

Markowitz proclaimed May 6 - May 12, 2013, “Long Island College Hospital National Nurses Week Recognition in the City of Brooklyn, USA.”

The nurses, along with caregivers, doctors, patients, community supporters, and elected leaders, including Marty Markowitz, were the foundation of local activist efforts to save LICH from closure by its operator SUNY Downstate.

The hospital is currently seeking a new owner.
