Boerum Hill a Hit With Lesbians, Says Real Estate Study

The data says that Boerum Hill has a large population of gay women, as well as one of Brookyn's highest real estate price tags.

For Gay Pride month, the Trulia Real Estate Blog crunched the most recent Census data to pinpoint the country’s biggest “gayborhoods,” and correlated it with real estate square footage prices – dubbing Boerum Hill one of the most popular (and expensive) spots with lesbian women in New York, at $647 per square foot.

The number one New York neighborhood for gay women was Park Slope ($664 per square foot), with Prospect Heights ($539 per square foot) coming in third, according to the study. Gay men seemed to prefer Manhattan, though they make up a significant population in Brooklyn Heights, says Trulia.

When FIPS looked at this data, they pointed out that, excluding Manhattan, property values in Brooklyn were higher than any of the top ten neighborhoods populated by gay men, save for the Castro in San Francisco. The same was found for lesbian “gayborhoods,” too, with only a higher price per square foot in the Castro.

According to Trulia, across the country the common pattern seems to be that gay men tend to live in more expensive areas – the typical same-sex male couple lives in a ZIP code with a median price per square foot of $208, compared with $139 for same-sex female couples and $127 for all households.
