A Partridge in a Pear Tree: By Brooklyn

There are 12 days left until Christmas, have you bought all of your gifts yet?

In "The Twelve Days of Christmas," an English Christmas carol in which each verse is built on top of the previous verses, a gift is given from one true love to another over the course of 12 consecutive days, with each day's present becoming significantly grander.

But what the heck is with all of the birds? And why exactly would anyone want "8 Maids a Milking," anyway? The origins and symbolism behind this traditional song have long been argued by scholars.

That debate likely won't be resolved this season. So instead, why not use the song as musical inspiration for last-minute holiday shopping around Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and nearby.

To kick things off, check out this ceramic ornament by Perch ($28), a Red Hook artist who had fortunately delivered her holiday order to By Brooklyn before Sandy hit—and ultimately flooded her studio work space.

On the first day of Giftmas, you can give your true love this "partridge in a pear tree" and feel good about contributing to a local independent business owner's recovery.
