Strong Place? What it’s all about.

The History of Strong Place in Cobble Hill.

Strong Place is located in Brooklyn’s Historic district of Cobble Hill. Cobble Hill is an old neighborhood, which has a history that goes back to the first farmers in the area who were granted land patents as early as the 1640’s. After the American Revolution the farm land began to develop into a more urban setting. Home development didn’t begin until the early to mid 1800’s.

An 1840 street directory shows forty-five homes, with development occurring rapidly. Single homes were specifically being built by wealthy merchants and businessmen. The reason that development of homes in Cobble Hill began to rise was because of the convenience of commuting to Manhattan via the Fulton ferry, which was established back in 1814.

Strong Place was the earliest settled street in the southern part of what is now Cobble Hill. It had eight residents in 1840, and the placement of the homes that were built guided city planners in arranging the parallel and intersecting streets, which currently surround it.

By the 1860’s, Cobble Hill was an established community, with churches, fine stores, banks and shops, however it did not remain a wealthy enclave for very long. Albert T. White’s model tenements, built in 1876-1879 heralded the changes in the neighborhood. Many of the houses slowly became rooming houses, which became homes to many immigrant groups whom were settling in Brooklyn—specifically the Irish, Swedes, Norwegians, English and Germans.

Now 150 years later in 2011, the history of residential development continues with the construction of three new townhouses on the corner of Strong Place and Kane Street—It  is arguably one of the last best pieces of residential land in Cobble Hill that comes with a rich and varied history.
