Sunflower Seed Montreal Style Bagel from B&B Empire

A sweeter and healthier feeling bagel.

I visited B&B Empire, the new Montreal style bagel shop on the corner of Clinton Street and Atlantic Avenue, on a recent hot, humid and sticky morning. The cafe was freezing, a welcome respite from the great outdoors, er, New York City in the summer.

While the level of AC was surprising, what was even more surprising was the bagel.

Have you ever even heard of a sunflower seed bagel?

The sunflower seeds were toasted, but not too much, and gave the bagel, already slightly sweet in flavor, an added nutty taste. The seed made the Montreal style bagel, denser than a New York bagel, impeccably interesting.

I chose sundried tomato cream cheese, which is a flavor I never, ever pick. But on this kind of bagel, and with the added seediness, it was perfect.

The wood burning oven at B&B is also impressive. When I was there the door to the bake room was open. It was quite a sight to be seen.
