Shelsky's is Open, Proclaims Marty Markowitz

The smoked fish market is now open on Smith Street.

Borough President Marty Markowitz put it bluntly Sunday while posing for pictures in front of

"This is old jew, new jew," he said, laughing.

Markowitz being the old jew and the younger Pete Shelsky the new jew, obviously.

Either way, both were happy to be celebrating Shelsky's new shop -- and they had a very large side of smoked salmon to show for it.

The shop sells all manner of smoked fish, pickled herring and pickles, but they also sell chocolate covered raspberry rings, (my favorite), and a certain bialy sandwich called "Member of the Tribe." (You can get one if you're not a member.)

Head to Shelsky's for a taste of the Lower East Side in Carroll Gardens/Boerum Hill. 251 Smith Street between Douglass and Degraw.
