Salon Mizuno Does Great Hair -- And Gives Back

Through donating a portion of its profits to charity, this brand new salon makes the business of looking good, feel good.

It's not often you equate a new hair 'do with helping others, but through her brand new hair studio -- Salon Mizuno -- hair stylist Yuko Mizuno is out to marry the two ideas.

Mizuno, a former stylist at Henry Street's , was inspired to strike out on her own after this year's devastating events in her home country of Japan.

"After the earthquake, I felt useless because I didn't know what to do," explains Mizuno. "My father called me a few days after the earthquake. He told me how the American Red Cross flew in from all over the world to help. They didn't care which country they were in or who they were helping -- they were just people who wanted to give. My dad was so grateful, he told me to thank everyone. I realized then that it doesn't matter where you are or what you do - you could find a way to help people."

Salon Mizuno will donate a portion of its profits from each day's total sales to revolving charities, starting with the American Red Cross. To kick things off, Mizuno is holding an open house art opening at her salon as a fund-raising launch party this Sunday, September 11 from 3 - 6 p.m.

Over the years, Mizuno's warm personality and shear talent have garnered a devout local following. Neil Beckerman, a client of Mizuno's for over eight years, feels Mizuno's charitable take on business is, in a word, "awesome."

"I remember asking about her family in Japan during last year's disaster and she kept saying she wanted to give back in some way," says Beckerman. "She's actually devoted to being a part of our community -- not because of some disaster -- but because she wants to be a charitable person who helps others."

"I've been living and working in the neighborhood for a while," says Mizuno. "I love that people in this neighborhood care about this neighborhood."

This Sunday's Open House at Salon Mizuno will feature the work of three artists and there will be refreshments and a raffle for discounts and free products. For a $10 donation to the American Red Cross, visitors will receive a free gift.
