Potato Pizza? No Way, Says Giardini Owner

As the Giants prepare to take on the 49ers for a spot at the Super Bowl, one Carroll Gardens pizzeria is starting a war with San Francisco.

Jerry Finazzo of Smith Street’s has thrown down the gauntlet for Giants fans, and New York-style pizza fans, says the Daily News. Finazzo has created the “I Love New York” pie, the report says, to celebrate the team as they prepare to go up against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, and reigniting a little East Coast vs West Coast rivalry at the same time.

Finazzo, whose pie is topped with pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, onions and peppers, had harsh words for the owner of California pizza chain Escape from New York Pizza, according to the News, saying: “There’s no such thing as California pizza,” and blasting the restaurant for daring to use roasted potato on their pies.

In Deceber 2010, , on the hunt for the best slice. Food critic Leila Cohan-Miccio said Giardini’s crust was “airy, yet dense,” robust sauce and “slightly tangy cheese.” The slice easily ranked top.

And last March, this reporter happened to visit an Escape from New York Pizza location, on Haight Street in San Francisco. Final verdict? No contest, Brooklyn will always rule in terms of pizza.
