P.J. Hanley's Reopens as 'Goldenrod'

Out with the old and in with the...older.

Brooklyn's oldest operating tavern P.J. Hanley's—briefly shuttered for the last few months due to financial issues—has reopened in Carroll Gardens with a new name and a new/old aesthetic. Welcome back to the neighborhood, Goldenrod.

"[Owners] researched a number of names," explained representative Michael Tulipan, acknowledging a previous report that the tavern would be called 'Ryan's. "They settled on Goldenrod because in 1893 the space was leased as a bar to showcase the products of the Otto Huber Brewery (which back then operated in Bushwick). Otto Huber’s main beer brand was called Goldenrod."

In keeping with the name, the bar's interior has been renovated to evoke an 1800s vibe, complete with pressed tin ceilings and walls. All of the TVs previously inside were also removed.

The new menu for the local watering hole will focus on burgers (two Pat LaFrieda blends and a falafel variation), pizzas (margherita, bacon and blue, sausage and peppers with quail egg, among others) and other small bites such as jars of hummus, ricotta or chicken liver mousse with accompanying toasts and crudite.

Hours will eventually run from 11am to 4am daily. But for the time being, the bar will only be open at night.
