Crop to Cup Finds a New Home

The family-farmed coffee seller moves to Gowanus.

After less than a year on Atlantic Avenue, cult coffee favorite Crop to Cup has hit the road in search of wide open spaces.

The shop, which peddled family-grown coffee from Uganda and Burundi along with Brooklyn-made food stuffs and antiques from its storefront, will open next month in a more spacious Gowanus locale, at 13th Street and Third Avenue.

The purpose of the move, said co-owner Taylor Mork, is mostly to "consolidate office space" and expand the retail store and café.

In addition to more space, the new storefront places the emphasis on Crop to Cup coffee, reimagining the store as a simple espresso bar, rather than a "retail co-op" like the old store. While other locally made goods might still be on the menu, according to co-owner Alexis Grossman, they will definitely not be the focus this time around.

A Brooklyn flea regular prior to opening up shop on Atlantic Avenue, Crop to Cup deals in coffee from small family farms, importing the beans directly from farmers Mork met while working as a coffee exporter in Ugdanda.

The café will serve up your usual espresso and drip along with single-serve cups made with contraptions like Clever Coffee Drippers and Hario drippers from Japan.

Thanks to the extra square footage, Crop to Cup will also play host to special coffee-related events, such as coffee cuppings, demonstrations and classes.

According to Mork, ultimately the new digs won out because of the square footage, but the decision was pushed along by the neighborhood's diverse, vibrant atmosphere.

"There are a lot of artists and musicians," said Mork. "It's an up-and-coming neighborhood."
