Local Businesses Named in Annual NY Mag 'Best Of' Issue

Battersby, Black Gold, Smith Canteen and Idlewild Books all earned an award.

Living as we do in most readers would likely agree that our local businesses and restaurants are some of the best around. Still, it’s always nice to receive an acknowledgement from an outside source.

In its annual ‘Best of New York’ 2012 issue, New York magazine touted a handful of Carroll Gardens-, Cobble Hill- and Boerum Hill-based establishments that attract Manhattanites from the furthest reaches of the island for their premium wares.

Books on 249 Warren Street near Court Street was noted for its fantastic French-language classes,   at 461 Court Street at Lucquer Street was spotlighted for being a superior record shop, and at 343 Smith Street near Carroll Street was given props for its fantastic Fried-Chicken Sandwich.

Lastly, newcomer at 255 Smith Street near Douglass Street was named "Best Salad" for their Southeast Asiatic riff on kale, which "combines the raw (shaved Brussels sprouts, julienned kohlrabi, lacinato-kale chiffonade) with the cooked (flash-fried kale and Brussels-sprout leaves) and tosses them with Thai basil, cilantro, and mint. But the clincher is the vinaigrette: lime juice, garlic, fish sauce, and Thai bird chiles, sweetened with palm sugar. It’s hot and cold, crispy and crunchy, sweet and sour with a bit of funk: a multiculti salad for a kale-crazed age."
