Broken English Closes, Will Reopen as Jarro

The Bergen St. restaurant will be ready to serve diners on Feb. 25, say reps.

In the second story today of a neighborhood business reinventing itself, a Bergen Street restaurant has quietly shuttered and will reopen next week anew.

Broken English—an Italian spot focusing on Roman cuisine, which had received positive writeups in New York magazine and the New York Times since opening in 2011—has had paper covering its windows for several days but, confoundingly, a sign in the storefront advertising for a "barman (man) and bar attendant (girl)." The business's website is also no longer operating, the homepage stating simply that it's "under construction."

But neighbors won't have to wait long to learn the fate of the space at 68 Bergen Street: The restaurant will reopen as Jarro [pronounced YA-rro], a Mediterranean bistro, on Monday, Feb. 25.

In Spanish, the word jarro means "pitcher" or jugful.

"We will eventually serve a bar menu, brunch, lunch and dinner," said a woman who answered the phone there on Tuesday afternoon. "But to start, we're only going to open for dinner for the first two weeks. Come pay us a visit!"
