A Chocolate Cupcake with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Downtown Atlantic on a rainy night

I have heard conflicting opinions of the cupcakes at . Some say the cupcakes are luxurious, other say they lack in nuance and sophistication.

But I love the cupcakes at Downtown, they’re fluffy and thick and the sheer size of one is much bigger than your usual cake-like delicacy with a frosted top.

On a rainy night last week, I stopped in for a cupcake and chose, surprisingly, plain chocolate with vanilla frosting. I generally tend toward the more outrageous: red velvet with cream cheese frosting, or chocolate with coconut cream. Not this time, I was going plain all the way. (The cupcake did boast a light dusting of sprinkles, for color's sake.)

And the simplicity was perfect. Food tends to taste better if it fits the mood, afterall. And I was feeling flustered. A light chocolate flavor, amplified by a thick brush of vanilla buttercream, and life felt easy.
