6 Last-Minute Locales for Cinco de Mayo Fiestas

Patch's top picks for south of the border flavor.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day. That national patriotic holiday in Mexico is actually celebrated on September 16.

What margarita-raising revelers are actually toasting today is Mexico's triumphant victory over the French at La Puebla on May 5, 1862—and it's not too late to get into the spirit! Here are some top spots to relax, kick back and sip a salt-rimmed glass:

Alma, 141 5th Ave.
Head to Columbia Street for Mexican fare with views to kill for. The winterized roof deck boasts unobstructed scenic vistas featuring the spectacular Manhattan skyline – and the mushroom enchiladas with pepitas are pretty good too. Just remember, the top floor doesn't take reservations. So arrive early to claim a seat.

Mix things up with French-meets-Mexicana cuisine: French-style steak tartare, tequila-and-pepper-marinated steak tartare, "escargot à la Mexicana," with jalapeños and basil, duck confit enchiladas and fusion tacos.
