Parent Talk: When To Enroll Our Kids In Music Lessons

How early is too early?

Parent Talk is a new feature on Carroll Gardens Patch, part of the Raising Brooklyn initiative that aims to address the questions and needs of local families. We invite you and your friends to help us build a community of support for families.

Each week in Parent Talk, our Family Council will take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

Moms, dads, grandparents and the diverse families who make up our community will have a new resource for questions about local neighborhood schools, the best pediatricians and the thousands of other issues that arise while raising children.

Parent Talk will also be the place to drop in for a talk about the latest parenting hot topic.

To start things off, here's our first issue: children and music lessons.

Every time I turn on the television I see a commercial for that new Justin Bieber movie coming out this week. For some reason I always focus on the shot of him playing the drums as a toddler.

It makes me wonder when parents should enroll their children in formal music classes.  Some Brooklyn parents sign their kids up as young as 3-years old for Suzuki violin, viola, cello, guitar and piano lessons at the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music in Park Slope. Personally, I signed my daughter up for piano lessons at her school when she started 1st grade, and I’ve often wondered if that was too young.

In an area that is home to a bunch of popular tween bands, tons of music venues and enough mommy and music classes to fill up an entire week, it’s obvious that Brooklyn is an extremely musical borough. It’s a great place to introduce kids to music. However, when do you think is a good age to start music classes? And do you have any great spots for classes or amazing music teachers in the area?
