Local Gallery Curates Gowanus Exhibition, Searches for Neighborhood Artists

"The Gowanus Show," will showcase art crafted by Gowanus-based artists who have until Aug. 19 to submit work for consideration.

A local gallery is searching for Gowanus-based artists to participate in its upcoming exhibition that will spotlight neighborhood talent.

Ground Floor Gallery's "The Gowanus Show," will showcase art crafted by local artists, according to Krista Saunders, one of the galler's directors.

"We are looking for artists who have studios or live/work spaces within the Gowanus Canal neighborhood: Smith St. to the west, Fifth Avenue to the east, Baltic Street in the north and 16th Street in the south and who do not have gallery representation," Saunders wrote in an email detailing the upcoming show.

Artists have until Aug. 19 to submit their work for consideration. Between two and three images of work can be sent to submissions@groundfloorbk.com. There is a $5 submission fee which, will be used towards labor and marketing costs of the exhibitions, to be paid through the gallery's website

Artists are instructed to include the title, size, medium and price they would like to sell their work for. The gallery takes 50 percent commission.

"Please note that we pride ourselves on offering everyday New Yorkers original artwork for affordable prices. We encourage you to stop by the gallery to get a sense of our pricing," the gallery's website notes.

Artists will be notified within the following week if their work has been selected.

Organized in partnership with ArtsGowanus and the Gowanus Open Studio, "The Gowanus Show" will be on view from Oct. 4-27, with an opening reception on Oct. 4 to be held from 6-8:30 p.m.

Founded in the spring of this year by Saunders and co-director Jill Benson, the Ground Floor Gallery looks to "empower the general public by educating them about contemporary art practice, hosting artist salons and other events, and encouraging interaction between local residents and the artists-in-residence throughout the exhibition season."
