Freshening Up Your Home for Spring

Fun ideas to welcome the new season!

It’s almost May and the warmer days aren't too far off. In these times it's important to get through the Spring cleaning, yes, but it's also necessary to decorate your home for the season. What are the best ways to update your home for spring?

First tip: focus on the windows. A new season means different weather; bring the outdoors in via your windows. If you have thick winter curtains or drapes, time to swap them for lighter ones to let in the spring sunlight. Of course, don’t forget to open up your windows (even if it's still a little chilly) to let in the fresh air!

Rachel Leibowicz who owns  recommends following in the tradition of 19th century homeowners to welcome spring.

If your rugs are heavy or you have quite a few, think about putting them away to create a lighter feel in a room. There's nothing like walking barefoot across cool hardwood floors or tile as the weather heats up.

You can also take the opportunity to add some brighter colors or patterns into your home's palette. Nothing says good-bye to winter quite like color.

Jennifer Welte, whose apartment was featured in the last Home Works , recommends going from solids to a combination of prints and solids. Reflect the scenery change taking place outside and try a floral pattern or draw inspiration from your favorite flower's clor.

Also, ‘tis the season for cleaning and organizing. Jessica Salgert, Krrb.com’s Community Manager, says that right now is when she is selling or giving away “all the warm objects that kept me cozy through the winter and opting for a more minimal lifestyle.”

Springtime means making room in your home and allowing things room to breathe. I know I prefer lighter food, wearing lighter clothing and I just want everything around me to feel less weighed down, including the physical space in which I live. When it's warm, less is more, which is why April is a great month to assess what belongings you really need and those you can live without.

Curtains aren’t the only way to add color into your home to welcome this new season. Welte suggests freshening up a room’s look by changing the hues of your pillow covers. In NYC where extra storage can be scarce, keeping a collection of pillow covers is easy (and cheap!) If you want to add even more color, Welte also mentioned replacing your duvet with a bright cotton coverlet.

Toni Nicolo, the owner of , had some great ideas for finishing touches.

Use nature-inspired baskets for storage, invest in new bed linens to create a new look in the bedroom and purchase a vase that you love so you're motivated to fill it with fresh flowers.

I'd love to hear how you update your home for spring. Leave a comment!
