When I found out that Brooklyn Heights Montessori had cancelled the session for junior campers (ages four and five) due to construction in their building, my summer plans came to a halt. I had planned on putting both of my kids in the Montessori camp. However, since my son isn’t yet 6-years-old, we had to find another camp.
At first I looked into camps that were a bit further away, but quickly realized that I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of getting the kids to a bus stop every morning. What happens if we oversleep and I’m forced to drive them to Bay Ridge or Staten Island? There goes my laid back summer!
I began to explore what camps were in the area, and I found tons. From art camps to French camps, there is something for everyone, and it’s all within walking distance.

Season: June 29 – August 26; Mini-Camp is available from August 29 - September 2
This camp has an outpost at on Carroll Street. Choose from a variety of programs including a Peewee camp for young kids who are just starting Pre-K. All of the camps, with the exception of Cirque d’Ete (Circus of the Summer), leave PS 58 in the morning and spend days at the beach or Prospect Park. Kids take swimming lessons at the Red Hook Pool and go on various other excursions around the area.
If your child enjoys circus arts, sign them up for Cirque d’Ete, where they can learn to juggle, among other skills. The circus camp stays at PS 58 and starts on July 11. You can also combine any of the programs. The camp is hosting an Open House this Saturday, Feb. 19, at 1 and 2:30 p.m. at 339 8th Street, just below Sixth Avenue.
Season: Session I: July 11, 2011 – August 5; Session II: August 8, 2011 – September 2
My daughter went to this camp when she was six and loved it. The camp takes the children swimming once a week and also takes them on a field trip each week. The time they spend in the studio is filled with art projects, performances and fun. Each week they explore a different theme. I was shocked at how excited Lucy was to return each day. The teachers are very nurturing. The camp is for kids age five and up.
Season: Session I: June 27 - July 8 (no camp Monday, July 4); Session II: July 11 - July 29
For the past three years, my daughter has been attending Brooklyn Heights Montessori Camp. They have instructional swim twice a week, and they go on a field trip once a week. They offer classes in filmmaking, blogging, cooking and many other subjects. The camp is only offering ssession for kids age six and up this year. Registration begins on March 1 and the camp fills up quickly.
Cobble Hill Ballet Workshop Camp
Season:
For ages 5 - 9 (Must be 4 by July 1); Choose - Morning 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. or afternoon, 1:30 - 5 p.m.
Week I: July 11 - 18, Week II: July 18 - 22
Tot’s Ballet for ages 3 - 4 (Must be 3 by July 1); 4-day camp, Tuesday - Friday, July 5 - 8
Calling all ballerinas! Cobble Hill Ballet again hosts its extremely popular ballet camp. If your child loves dancing or wants to learn, this is a great camp for them. Classes are divided into two age appropriate groups. The week culminates with a Friday performance. The day is structured around ballet, creative modern and a craft project. Campers will make props/costumes to use in the performance at the end of each week. There is also a 4-day camp for tots. The tot camp focuses on ballet, creative modern, craft project and snack time. Parents and caregivers are invited Fridays for a “ballerina tea party."

Summer Art in French: July 6 - 29 for children ages 3 - 4, 5 - 6 and 7 - 9
Spanish Summer Camp: Art, Music and Movement: July 11 - 22 for children ages 4 - 8
Located in Boerum Hill, kids can learn to express themselves in either Spanish or French through music, art and dance at this well-respected language studio. Have your child spend the summer learning a language while enjoying fun art projects and movement. This is a great camp for pre-schoolers since the camp accepts kids as young as 3-years-old. Also, it’s never too early to introduce your child to other languages.
Season: July 5 - August 26
You don’t have to go to France to send your children to French Camp. Housed at , this camp is open to both French and non-French speakers. Most activities are conducted in French. The day is filled with arts and crafts, drama, sports (they even teach traditional French sports) and other activities. Suited for kids ages 5 - 8, this unique educational experience will immerse your child in another language, while also letting them enjoy their summer.
