Phill Niblock, Annual Winter Solstice Concert

Brooklyn NY: Roulette welcomes maverick, minimalist composer Phill Niblock presenting his annual Winter Solstice concert featuring 6 hours of music, film and video as the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn and longest night of the year unfolds and winter begins in the Northern Hemisphere. Niblock has, as with many historical Winter Solstice traditions, earned his place in history battling the dark with light, feasting on a musical and visual marathon comparable to the Roman festival of Saturnalia.

An influential figure on the fringes of the Avant Garde, Niblock has influenced and impacted younger generations of composers such as Susan Stenger, Lois V Vierk, David First, Glenn Branca, Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo. Since 1968 Phill has also put on over 1000 concerts in his loft space, including Ryoji Ikeda, Zbigniew Karkowski, Jim O'Rourke and travelled the world with his truly unique digitally-processed monolithic microtonal drones creating sound without melody or rhythm producing imperceptible changes that creep up on his often unsuspecting audience. Niblock’s film, largely recorded on these worldwide excursions are images and echoes of people from different cultures working, devoid of drama and narrative, an incredible, ongoing record of the world at work.
