Brooklyn Garden Throws Party for Underappreciated Bugs

Fireflies have been stealing the spotlight for far too long.

Let's hear it for the slugs!

The South Brooklyn Children’s Garden will host its inaugural "Bug Festival" on Saturday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., celebrating the central role that bugs play in the environment and gardening.

Intrigued? Read on.

“As our plants mature during July, bugs are standing room only in the garden," said South Brooklyn Children’s Garden founder Shannon Mulholland in a release. “We are looking forward to inviting the neighborhood into our garden to learn about bugs and to enjoy all the garden has to offer."

Festivities will include a "Bug Costume Contest and Parade" taking place at noon, a "Lady Bug and Praying Mantis Release," "Butterfly Exploration," arts, crafts and live music by The Dad Beats.

No word on whether the band will be playing Beatles cover songs.

But, there will be complimentary snacks provided by Margaret Palca Bakes and Italian ices by House of Pizza. This event is free and open to the public.
