Beer for Dinner, Robots that Hunt, and a Masterless Ensemble

A roundup of today's best Brooklyn events.

This article was written by Rob Myers.

1.
Dean Street KelSo Beer Dinner

"Beer Dinner?" Ok, it's not just beer, but the beers and the non-sudsy parts of the meal are specifically paired to accentuate and heighten each other's flavors. The back room has been reserved for the event, but tickets are limited. Still not sure? You can see the whole mad scheme on the Dean Street website.

2.
Ensemble Sans Maitre

Our French is a little rusty, but we think that roughly translates as "the ensemble without a master." Together they bring their talents -- flute, viola, guitar, percussion and voice -- to bear on what they call "unusual repertory" pieces and works from new composers. By their powers combined they are Capt... uh, Ensemble sans maître.

3. Secret Science Club presents: ''Robot (R)Evolution'' With biologist and cognitive scientist John Long.

One of the many, many cool things about robots is what they can teach us about ourselves and other life forms. Researcher John Long reverse-engineers parts of life forms to study how and why those particular forms emerged from evolution's chaotic wanderings. Among the questions he asks are: Why do brains exist in the first place? What can robots teach us about how sex guides our species? How do predators and prey force each other to evolve? And wouldn't it be cool to build a robot shark? And where can we get one of his robot sharks? That last one might have been our question.

4. Hattie Carthan Community Market Strategic Planning Meeting

It's almost market season, and the Hattie Carthan Community Market's founder Yonnette Fleming is meeting with volunteers to put together their 2013 strategy.
