5 Things To Do This Weekend: July 19-21

From outdoor concerts to outlandish events, Brooklyn keeps the good times rolling despite high temperatures.

It's hot as blazes, sure. But New Yorkers are made of stronger mettle than most and we certainly won't let weather get in the way of a good time. Here are five places to be and be seen this weekend around Brooklyn.

The Metropolitan Opera Performs in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m.
Get comfortable on the grass tonight at Pier 1 and enjoy the dulcet tones and superlative scores of some of the most renowned arias and duets in the world.

Miniature Boat and Robot Pond on the Gowanus Canal, 2nd St. at Bond St.
Saturday, July 20 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Explore the depths of ye olde Superfund site by "piloting miniature remote control boats and aquatic robots equipped with video cameras and environmental sensors." It's just crazy enough to be fascinating.

Create Your Own Brooklyn Carousel Crawl
Saturday, July 2-Sunday, July 21
Relive your youth and take a spin on one—or three!—local carousels this weekend. Begin at Prospect Park's Carousel, just inside the Willink entrance (intersection of Ocean and Flatbush Avenues and Empire Boulevard) and whirl around for $2 a pop. Next, head down to DUMBO for the waterfront vistas offered from Jane's Carousel (also $2 per person). Then, take a water taxi over to Governors Island to experience  a vintage bicycle carousel (and other rides) temporarily installed at the Féte Paradiso taking place in Nolan Park ($3 per person, per ride).

Walt Whitman's Fort Greene Park, Myrtle Ave at Washington
Sunday, July 21 at 1 p.m.
Discover the special connection between one of America's best poets and this local green space—and how he contributed to the creation of Brooklyn's first park.

Food Truck Rally at Grand Army Plaza
Sunday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Miss out on Uber's ice cream trucks on demand this week? Fret not, there will be plenty of frozen treats and other deliciousness from the likes of COOLHAUS, Nuchos,  Gorilla Cheese NYC and more on the plaza.
