3 Ways To Celebrate Bastille Day in South Brooklyn

It's time to get down with your French self.

Bonjour, Brooklyn! It's that time again—the time of year when everyone in the borough becomes an honorary Frenchman for the day. This weekend, let your Francophile flag fly and celebrate Bastille Day with your neighbors.

There are a slew of festive events taking place around the neighborhood. Here are three to try if you want to...

Take it easy.
There's a new French restaurant in town and it's ready to be your next favorite haunt. Owned by a local expat couple, Pompette is Carroll Gardens' answer to the sweet bistros of Paris. From the foie gras to the pates to the rillettes and pastas, everything is made in house. And a spectacular a la carte menu for Bastille Day will offer special treats like minted pea soup, steak au poivre and roasted tilefish with duchesse potatoes. But if you just want to relax at the bar with a glass of wine, you will be welcome too. Pompette is located at 550 Court Street at 9th Street. Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for dinner from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays for brunch from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Take it to the street.
Smith Street, that is. Celebrating its 11th Annual Bastille Day celebration, host Bar Tabac will temporarily fill the strip with sand, allowing teams of petanque players to compete against one another from noon until night. Spectate the surreal, chic sportiness of it all with a glass of Lillet (a sponsor) and a déjeuner of various French treats from the surrounding food stalls, like Bien Cuit or Dassara Brooklyn Ramen. Music, parasols, and striped shirts galore add to the swirling scene. Sunday, July 14 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Take your dog. Can't bear to do anything without Fluffy by your side? You don't have to. By Brooklyn, located at 261 Smith Street, will host its 2nd Annual French Bulldog Party in its backyard this weekend! French cocktails and snacks will be served, pooches will be dressed in party outfits, and proceeds will be donated to Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue—trés awesome, no? Saturday, July 13 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Entry costs $10 with a French bulldog, $15 without one.
