Street Renaming Reflects Italian Heritage in Carroll Gardens

Court Street at Fourth Place will be renamed for the citizens of Mola di Bari, Italy.

Many local Italians will celebrate Sunday when Court Street between Third and Fourth places is renamed "The Citizen's of Mola di Bari Way."

South Brooklyn was, and still is, home to many people who immigrated from Mola, a small fishing village of approximately 26,000 people in Southern Italy. To celebrate their Carroll Gardens identity, the citizens made plans for the street renaming. In November, Community Board 6 voted to approve it, and in January, so did the City Council.

"As more members of the Mola community immigrated to America modern day Carroll Gardens became the first home for many Molesi in America," wrote John Heyer in a press release about the street renaming.
