Surprise! Smith-9th St. Station Reopening Delayed

Brooklyn's long-shuttered Smith-9th Street subway station, a convenience for Carroll Gardens and "a gateway for Red Hook," will reopen a couple of weeks after the previously announced April 1 reopening date.

At Thursday's Community Board 6 meeting, representatives of the MTA stated that the reopening would be pushed back to the end of April, due to issues related to the Culver Viaduct Project. F and G trains will begin making regular stops at the station the week of April 22, according to the new timeline.

“This has been a long and complicated project but we are grateful for the community’s patience while we performed this necessary work," Thomas F. Prendergast, President of MTA New York City Transit and Interim Executive Director of the MTA in a release. "This station will be 80 years old this summer and this rehabilitation will see it reach that milestone with a much improved appearance and functionality."

Notable reconstruction work includes an "expanded street-level control house, a new architectural metal panel escalator enclosure and rehabilitated stairs and platforms... new lighting, state-of-the-art public address and CCTV systems, as well as a 14-foot-tall mosaic, installed as part of the MTA Arts for Transit."

At least it's not August as some residents had rumored.
