Rich Block, Poor Block: A Breakdown of South Brooklyn 'Hoods

Anyone who takes a stroll through Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill is bound to notice that it is wealthier than some other parts of the borough. But how large is the income disparity from one South Brooklyn block to another?

Thanks to the efforts of the website, Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks, we have some answers to those questions. The site uses data compiled from the 2007-2010 American Community Survey to show median household income by census tract.

The data shows that of Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill's multiple census tracts, the 67th—bordered by Kane and President, Henry and Court streets—is wealthiest, with an estimated median household income of $119,423.

Though most residents won't see a perceptible difference in the immediate neighboring tracts, the 71st just two blocks away—bordered by Hoyt and Nevins, Bergen and Douglass streets—shows a significant drop-off in median household income to $35,963.

Across the BQE, Red Hook median household incomes can range from $16,748 to $74,219, depending upon the tract.

For perspective, middle class in New York ranges between $50,282.00 to $63,315.00, according to the survey. But most urban dwellers can agree that the city is more expensive to live in than elsewhere in the state.
