- and to celebrate, the Carroll Gardens Association is sponsoring a this Saturday.

"We want to get people down to see Columbia Street," said Michael Racioppo, Community Organizer with CGA. "We hope to draw attention to our local merchants."

Columbia Street, the heart of Carroll Gardens before the BQE cut the neighborhood into two pieces, is much loved by locals. But Columbia Street is still a bit of an undiscovered gem, mostly because it is off the beaten path. Racioppo's job at the Carroll Gardens Association, a 40-year-old housing and economic development group, is to change that.

"It's a little bit out of the way, but we have a lot to offer," said Racioppo, who is also working to develop a Merchant's Association and a restaurant walk event.

This is the third annual Columbia Waterfront Street Fair, and attendees can expect food stands from local restaurants, live music, vendors, elected officials, pet adoption and games for kids.

Racioppo is determined to bring people to the strip, and believes in the restaurants and businesses.

"The location can be a bit of a problem but if we can make it a destination, we will appeal to consumers," said Racioppo.

The Columbia Waterfront Street Fair is on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Columbia Street between Union and Degraw streets and Union Street between Hicks and Columbia streets.
