Not Your Nana's Bingo Night

The Brooklyn Women's Rugby Ream will host an upcoming fundraiser.

It's time to break out grandma's lucky chips. The Brooklyn Women's Rugby Club is hosting its 3rd Annual Bingo Night fundraiser on Saturday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m at PJ Hanley's, located at 449 Court Street near Carroll Street.

What's the connection between rugby and bingo, you ask? That great international unifier: fun.

"Brooklyn Women’s Rugby Annual Bingo Night was the fundraising brainchild of former members Talia Fromm and Leslie Von Pless," explained club president Melanie Kaloust. "First held in 2010, Bingo Night’s mission was, and still is, to raise funds for the operating and traveling costs of our spring season; to raise awareness among other women about rugby in New York."

According to the team's website, women's rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and it has the same rules, regulations and equipment as men's rugby—a rarity in the world of sports. But you don't have to be a pro to join. The rough and tumble team is made up of rugby veterans and newcomers alike.

If you're interested in learning more about the sport, the teammates will be on hand to answer questions at the event. But if you're just a fan of bingo, that's OK too.

Most of the prizes that will be given away on Bingo Night have been donated from local merchants, such as a gift card to Pacific Standard, movie passes to Cobble Hill Theatres to wine, BWR gear packages, a mystery prize from the Pleasure Chest—not exactly the same as when Nana used to play. But, cheeky or not, it's all for a good cause.

"Bingo Night has been a success each year, benefiting all who are involved, from donors to participants alike," said Kaloust. "It’s a tradition we hope to continue, so stay on the lookout for a chance to join in on the fun.

A ticket price of $15 will earn visitors 2 bingo cards, as well as beer and food for the evening. But you can increase your odds with additional $1 cards.
