Memorial Day Mega-Fun

Our picks for keeping it local over the long holiday weekend.

Memorial Day: it's a federal holiday, a time for commemorating those who sacrifice themselves in military service, and the unofficial, un-scientific start of summer. It's also a great time to stay in Brooklyn and enjoy all the city has to offer when so many folks skip town.

Here's our guide to making the most of the long weekend:

The Brazen Head bar on Atlantic Avenue wants to help you get an early start on your staycation. On Friday, they’re doing a happy hour from 4 p.m. until closing; Saturday, it’s “BBQ with Lou,” starting at 5 p.m., with hot-off-the-grill specialties like Tandoori chicken, portabella and muenster sandwiches, grilled Italian sausage, and marinated hangar steak for $10; on Sunday it’s “Bloodies & Bagles” from 12 p.m. on; on the big day it’s complimentary wings from 5 p.m. on.

Nothing says “honoring fallen soldiers” like competitive eating, and Brooklyn Boulders has you covered on that front. The Degraw Street climbing gym is starting up their grills at 6 p.m. on Friday and offering $20 all you can eat hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers and beer, plus admission to bouldering and climbing walls. An extra 10 bucks buys your entry to a pound-for-pound hot dog eating contest beginning at 8 p.m.—whoever eats the most tube steak compared with their body weight wins a three-month membership to Brooklyn Boulder

Uncle Louie G’s new Smith Street outpost is offering a Free Italian Ice Party on Saturday (rain date Sunday). From 12 – 2 pm, they’ll be giving away free regular-sized Italian Ice—that’s two scoops. Just make sure you’re in line by 1:45 p.m.

It’s your patriotic duty to have a picnic sometime over the holiday, and the ideal place to undertake this solemn obligation is Governor’s Island, opening for the season this weekend. Free shuttles run from Pier 6 at Brooklyn Bridge Park.  On Saturday, Nolan Park's Family Festival features puppets, hula hoops, and bands. Sunday and Monday, the little island paradise’s Colonel’s Row is hosting Brewer’s PicNyc, a festival of street food, craft beer, and music.

While you’re waiting for your ferry, you can partake in one of America’s great Memorial Day ritual cuisines—Bark Hot Dogs is opening a stand at Pier 6.

Gowanus Grove, formerly known as the BKLYN Yard, kicks off its season on Sunday from 3 – 9 p.m. with Mister Sunday and special guest Fourtet. They’ll also be slinging sausages from Mile End, tacos and huaraches from the Red Hook Ball Fields’ Country Boys, and nice cold drinks from Botanica.

Wind down from all the fun and sun at the s Monday night TV Party—this week it’s the searing yet gentle comedy Freaks & Geeks, featuring a dodge-ball competition and a genuine high school photographer. Preserve your memories of Memorial Day 2011 forever and ever.
