Knives Will Fly at Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Iron Chef Battle

Ted & Honey to take on Maybelle's in outdoor cooking competition Sunday, July 22

Many moms and dads in Carroll Gardens are no doubt masters of the 30-minute meal or the breakfast blitz—two modern-day family rituals attempting to get food on the table in a limited amount of time. But how would your cutting board skills hold up if there was a secret ingredient, and a panel of judges, and instead of one dish—five?

Two local talents will take up the challenge for you next weekend as they vy for the title of Carroll Gardens Iron Chef.

In one corner, we have Pittsburgh expat Chris Jackson of , heralded for flavor-forward creations such as the Apricot Jalapeño & Chipotle Hot Sauce and inventive breakfast sandwiches like the Redneck ($5.50), a breakfast wrap of hominy grits, farmhouse cheddar, smoked ham and scrambled eggs.

In another corner, sits Ryan Miller of , perhaps best loved for its Chicken Club smeared with avocado mayo for lunch, fall-apart brisket appetizer at dinner, not to mention the inspired Chai-marinated pork chop.

Instead of Kitchen Stadium, the pair will battle it out on Carroll Street between Court and Smith at the .

Local Editor of Carroll Gardens Patch, will be one of three judges who will taste and critique a variety of dishes cooked by the chefs on site, under a time constraint, and using ingredients from the farmers market.

But unlike the popular Food Network series upon which the competition is based, fans can watch the event live—right in their own neighborhood.

Who will be crowned Carroll Gardens Iron Chef? Find out next week, Sunday, July 22, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Until then, neighbors, with an open heart and an empty stomach, we say unto you in the words of the Chairman: 'Allez cuisine!'
