Even though Macy's decided to launch its fireworks over the Hudson River again this year, denizens on this side of the East River still have a lot of options to wish America a very Happy Birthday.

1. Chalk up another win for women's rights. For the first time this year, Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest will have a separate competition strictly for the females out there. So pig out, ladies.

2. The NYPD posted this reminder that personal and unlicensed use of fireworks is an incredibly bad idea and not to mention illegal.

3. And if you're wondering what the NYPD does with all of those confiscated fireworks, wonder no more (video courtesy of the Huffington Post).

4. Though this summer, the same apparently cannot be said for Staten Island's waterfowl, according to Gothamist.

5. Alternate side parking has been suspended for Independence Day. Parking meters do not have to be paid.
