Japan: Meet the Gowanus

Good Morning Japan filmed a segment along the banks of the canal.

We're used to murky water, trash and the occassional bird, but last week's influx of Japanese TV producers and news anchors was a sight not normally seen along the banks of the Gowanus Canal.

The crew was there to film a segment of "Good Morning Japan" called "New York Style." Producers wanted to shoot a segment on the canal because they were impressed with the community's support of the waterway, despite its status as a polluted Superfund site.

News anchor Yuriko Shimazu toured the Canal in a canoe with Gowanus Dredger Owen Foote, while other Canal supporters watched or paddled around themselves.
