Get Out: MulchFest, Atlantic Bazaars, Farmers Market, and More

Events this weekend in the neighborhood that you won't want to miss!

Where/When: 180 Remsen Street, Friday from 6 - 8 p.m.

Why Go: St. Francis College hosts a kick-off reception for William Loeb's new art exhibit “See.” Art will be on display January 3 to January 31.

Where/When: Atlantic and 4th Avenues, Saturday at 10 a.m.

Why Go: Bask in the afterglow of the holidays during this Municipal Art Society tour as participants learn about the winter holiday traditions in the Arab community that was established around Atlantic Avenue over a century ago. The tour will be led by writer, historian and genealogist, Mary Ann Haick DiNapoli as she guides participants through her neighborhood and its shops, discussing the history of the area as well as the traditions and foods special to this time of year.

Cost: $15

 

Where/When: Prospect Park or Fort Green Park, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Why Go: Bring your holiday tree to the Third Street entrance of Prospect Park or Washington Ave and Willoughby Ave at Fort Green Park, and it will be turned into mulch for healthy ground cover. Watch your tree go into the chipper and become environment-friendly mulch. Plus, you can take some home for your own yard or garden! Remember to remove all decorations from the trees. 

Cost: Free! 

 

Where/When: Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Saturday at 5 p.m.

Why Go: Come to hear music, see a film and talk with artist Lyle Ashton Harris as he discusses works by himself and others in the exhibition HIDE/SEEK: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, which explores issues of identity, family, gender, masculinity, and race

Cost: Free! 

 

Where/When: 388 Atlantic Avenue, Sunday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Why Go: Besides staples like fresh vegetables and fruit, meats, milk and eggs, the Foodshed features regional vendors offering products like cheeses, yogurt, ice-cream, jams, honey, sauces and salsas, milled grains, breads and baked goods, pickles and other healthy ferments, juices, ciders, wines and beers. The market is a place not only to shop but also to learn about the challenges and opportunities in creating a sustainable food system.

 Cost: Free!
