Get Out: Commemorate 9/11 This Weekend

What to do locally in order to never forget.

Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Pay your respects to those that lost their lives that day, and continue to lose their lives today fighting in Afghanistan, by attending one or more of these events this weekend.

The free week of multimedia art and music events celebrates the service of grassroots volunteers in response to the 9/11 attacks. Begins today.

, Sacred Hearts and St. Stephens Church, Summit and Hicks streets

Join the Maria Addolorata and the people of Mola di Bari for this annual procession. The event marks the neighborhoods devotion to the Maria S.S. Addolorata, "Our Lady of Sorrow", but also commemorates the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. "She shows us that it is appropriate to mourn while at the same time never losing our faith." Sept. 11 at 3 p.m., mass in Italian to follow.

 

, St. Ann's Church, 157 Montague St., Brooklyn Heights

Spoken word, music and video presentations are incorporated into this service, and presenters include elected officials, first responders from the fire and police departments, Brooklyn-based authors, faith leaders and community members. Music will be provided by the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, the String Orchestra of Brooklyn, Grace and Spiritus Chorale of Brooklyn and St. Ann’s Choir. Sept. 11 at 3 p.m.

Visit local PS 29 parent, business owner and artist Pietro Costa's "grace" sculpture, composed of concentric red neon rings suspended from a 20-foot ceiling, forming "a swaying tower of light that serves as a memorial for the victims of 9/11." Sept. 10 from 6 - 8 p.m.

 

, Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn Heights 

Discuss "personal philanthropy in a turbulent and changing world" with Marilyn Gelber, President of Brooklyn Community Foundation and Julie Salamon, author of "Rambam’s Ladder: A Meditation on Generosity and Why It Is Necessary to Give." Sept. 11 at 2 p.m.
