For Cinco de Mayo, Margaritas and More

Where to go for the Fifth of May!

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s unlikely 1862 victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla. But stateside, the meaning can be easily translated into a single word: margaritas.

Though the true meaning of the holiday may have been lost in translation, there’s no reason not to get into the spirit! Oh, and drink specials are good too.

A Free For All at Pacifico

on Smith Street is famous for pretty wild times and urban outdoor seating that feels tropical. Things will be the same on Thursday. "It's gonna be really, really packed. It's gonna be a huge free for all!" reported one employee. But seriously, Margaritas are $25 for pitchers and $4 for drinks until 7 p.m., and then just $32 and $6 all night long.

Outdoor Dining at Diego

Diego is a new and dressed up Mexican restaurant on Smith Street. We stopped in for lunch and . For Cinco de Mayo, owner James Geritano tells us there will be plenty of food and drink specials, and likely a live band! The patio, which is great for people watching, is OPEN!

Happy Hour at Comida

No need to let the sun set before you indulge in your first Cinco de Mayo cocktail. At , on Fifth Avenue and President Street in the Slope, happy hour starts at 4 p.m., with $5 margaritas, $4 sangria and $3 beers. They’ll also have food specials, so you can keep on drinkin’ and live music to keep you entertained.

Musica Mexicana at Littlefield

Honor at least some of the cultural significance of Cinco de Mayo at in Gowanus, with a . At 9 p.m., Banda de los Muertos, will be rolling out traditional Mexican brass band music, and at 10:30 p.m. Chicha Libre will keep the party going with Cumbia, the popular Latin American dance music. But don’t worry, there will be drink specials, too – how else are you going to work up the courage to dance?

Views and Classy Food at Alma

on Columbia Street serves up delicious Mexican fare, but really the reason to trek down to the Waterfront District is for the view. The winterized roof deck boasts a view of the spectacular Manhattan skyline -- and the enchiladas are pretty good too. Expect fancy and tasty drink and food specials. There are no reservations on the winterized roof deck, so get there early.

Alfresco at Fonda

Kick back on patio (which just opened for the season) with a killer margarita at a killer price. During happy hour (5 to 7 p.m.) at the Park Slope spot, sangria and classic margaritas are just $5. Or splurge on a classy cocktail, like the Tamarindo Margarita with Silver tequila, tamarind nectar, lime juice and orange liquor.
