Experiencing the Gowanus Canal – From a Canoe

The editors of Carroll Gardens and Park Slope Patch take a canoe trip down the canal with the Gowanus Dredgers.

The Gowanus Canal is much more than a polluted waterway – it is a natural habitat, an industrial passageway, and, as we found out, a great way to escape the city.

And the best way to see all of this? From a canoe.

Our guides were Owen Foote and Ray Howell of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, a member organization run by volunteers that leads canoe rides along the waterway. The Dredgers have a permanent trailer on the Canal, at 2nd Street just past Bond, which is filled with canoes and paddles.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, head to the Gowanus and take a boat out, for free!

Wow, if you don't like the idea of boating don't do it but "idiots" seems pretty narrow minded. It is a weirdly beautiful place the Gowanus and my hat is off to the people can see that. And my foot is to the backside of any local who scoffs at the "outsiders" trying to envision something other than a open sewer for the place. Go outsiders!

Oh Gowanus. Scar on Paumanouk. Let your open fester swoon with the Feces of lost generations. Let your black waters flow on the children who now walk your walled banks, cover those who boat over the bones of the lost and murdered. Toss time in with the dead cats, the oils of lost industry and the phantoms of a beautiful future.

Wishing death to someone that wants to float down a canal seems pretty fair.
