Does the Waterfront District Need Another Garden?

Board members argued the topic for close to an hour at Wednesday night's Community Board 6 meeting.

Board members drew a line in the dirt at the Community Board 6 meeting held at PS 32 on Wednesday night, discussing the same subject for nearly an hour—a proposed children's garden. 

The most heated debate of the evening came after the Parks Committee recommended supporting a proposal by a resident who would like to build a "Children's Garden" in the long-vacant lot at at the Southeast corner of 204 Columbia Street at Sackett Street.

"The proposal came to us from a woman with really, very creative ideas," enthused co-chair of the Glenn Kelly. "We would like to encourage her to seek funding for this project and move forward."

To do so, the property would need to be transferred to the under the Green Thumb Initiative. But one member worried that if the garden were created, the land would be difficult to turn into senior housing or affordable living, if desired, at a later date. Another gentleman pointed out that the vacant lot is diagonal to an existing garden and might benefit from being turned into a playground or something else.
