Community Meeting Tonight On Future Of Pacific Library

Come to the planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the YWCA on Third Avenue.

As reported last month, the Brooklyn Public Library is selling the Pacific Street branch on Fourth Avenue and will move to a planned building by a developer in 2016.

According to a spokesperson, the Brooklyn Public Library has been faced with a "unique situation" owning a building in disrepair and an opportunity to "replace it with a brand new branch at little or no cost." While the City Council must still approve the plan, Library representatives say there is no other recourse.

The Pacific Street branch is in need of $9 million in repairs to critical infrastructure and building systems, the official told Patch.

Sadly, the Pacific Street Library branch was the first Carnegie building to open in Brooklyn in 1904.

Although the move will not happen immediately, neighbors and politicians, including City Councilmember Steve Levin, State Assemblywoman Joan Millman and State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, want to start planning right away.
