Christ Church Construction and Traffic Detour Update

As the steeple and roof continue to undergo repairs, Cobble Hill residents can expect continued rerouting

Drivers in Cobble Hill can expect a new detour around Christ Church construction in the coming weeks.

during a flash thunderstorm in July, the steeple, roof and interior of Christ Church in Cobble Hill have been undergoing repairs. has caused portions of Clinton Street and Kane Street to be closed off and, as a result, "it’s resulted in aberrant traffic patterns," as noted at the Community Board 6 general meeting on Wednesday night.

As Clinton Street is expected to remain closed for another month, the Department of Buildings and the Department of Transportation have been asked to come up with a better detour as well as more signage to alert drivers of the closed roads. They are due to respond shortly.

Stay with Patch for updates.

Yesterday, signs were posted along what I am now calling "The Degraw Street Detour," that is, Degraw Street between Clinton and Smith. The detour passes the DEP construction site that takes up most of the intersection at Degraw Street and Tompkins Place (it is 200 feet long, 30 feet wide and 15 feet tall, in the middle of a narrow residential block). The new signs that were posted say that there will be no parking permitted on Degraw Street on Sept 19th, due to a filming of Blue Bloods. Now, we all know that there will be more disruption than simply lost parking spaces: over-sized trucks and trailers, piles of electrical equipment in the streets, stopped traffic during set-up and scene changes, etc. In other words: disruption of traffic flow. If all traffic from Clinton Street (including frustrated drivers, angry taxi drivers and huge 18-wheelers that keep getting stuck) continues to be forced onto The Degraw Street Detour, where will the traffic go when the TV crews set up? I've contacted CB6 and the 76th Precinct. More calls and e-mails from the community will get a faster response.

At Atlantic Avenue, Clinton Street traffic should be diverted to Hicks Street. There should be a sign on Clinton Street and Atlantic Avenue that only local traffic is allowed on Clinton Street. It is unsatisfactory to have traffic diverted along DeGraw Street.
