Carroll Park Concert Series Seeks Young Rockers

Friends of Carroll Park announce contest for middle-school age bands to open for larger acts.

There is a pivotal scene in the 2003 film School of Rock when Dewey Finn (portrayed by comedian Jack Black) accepts that his tween-aged students have advanced enough to play on their own.

"In the words of AC/DC," he tells his class, "We roll tonight... to the guitar bite... and for those about to rock... I salute you." But in real life, it often makes more sense for under-age rock 'n' rollers to hit the stage in the afternoon. And this summer, a lucky few will have the opportunity to do just that.

The Summer Concert Series is hosting a contest for bands to perform—and you only need apply if you're in junior high.

The family-friendly music fest coordinated by Friends of Carroll Park features four concerts between June and September. In the past, headlining acts have included Audra Rox, Randy Kaplan and . Neighbors can expect more of the same top-tier talent to come. But this year, the Carroll Park Summer Concert Series is upping the community-involvement ante by asking local kids to audition for the supporting slots.

"This year, we're hoping to find some young musicians and feature four middle school-aged bands as opening acts," said Lynne Melnick, a representative of the Friends of Carroll Park. "If you or a middle schooler you know would like to enter, please send us an email with music samples and adult contact information to carrollparkconcerts@gmail.com"

The concerts, which are free to attend, raise money through the sale of foods, crafts and donations to the park. In addition, this year four of the concerts will be in collaboration with area schools to benefit the arts. "Through these concerts we hope to be able to raise money for kids programming at the park and for arts education in our local schools," said Melnick. "All while having a whole lot of fun!"
