Carroll Gardens Rescue Kitty "Harley" Needs a Home

They say every dog has its day—but what about the cats?

Welcome to Friday Feline, a recurring column in which we spotlight a local rescue in need of a home. If you're looking for a low-maintenance animal that has already received most of its immunizations and tests, this is the place for you.

This week's subject is: Harlequin aka Harley aka Harles. In fact, this cat has as many aliases as charming traits.

C. Corey,  who rescues felines and coordinates adoptions in Carroll Gardens, spotted this black and white long-haired boy on her way to work one morning.

"I saw a long black tail that I thought might be a hair extension," she said. "I stopped and looked again and realized it was too fuzzy for that. As I walked back and took a second look I realized it was a cat's tail!

Upon further inspection, Corey discovered a cat tucked inside the tiny crack between two buildings where they didn't quite meet up. In a rush to work, she couldn't pick him up on the spot and left him there, hoping she would see the cat on her return home. On her evening commute, he was still there, wedged between the buildings, with only his tail visible. Corey grabbed a carrier and with a little food encouragement was able to coax him into the carrier.

"Harlequin is a gorgeous fluffy kitty—the most beautiful cat I have ever rescued," Corey boasted. "He loves to play, likes to nuzzle you, likes to be high up and put his paws on your shoulders to cuddle."

Most of the time Harley wants to be held, but he'll will let you know when he is done, Corey noted. He is happiest when you are in the room with him and ecstatic when you play with him, she added.

Harley is neutered, has tested negative for fiv/leuk, is up-to-date on his shots, litter-trained and loves to play.

"He is a wonderful boy who will continue to bloom and will become even more affection with steady love, affection and a home in which he feels safe and secure," she said, with one suggestion: "Harles is best in a home without other kitties or children, as he is still young and can be a bit bitey when he gets overstimulated."
