5 Things To Do Today: Play Chess, Discuss Pin-Ups, Improve Your Child's Education

Carroll Gardens-area subway, alternate side and event information you won't want to miss.

1. Unleash your inner Bobby Fischer. Play chess with other Brooklynites at the Brooklyn Library's Carroll Gardens Branch and (if you're very brave) let National Chess Master Manuel Ugarte analyze your moves. at Carroll Gardens Library, 396 Clinton Street between Union and Sackett Streets, 6:00 p.m., Free.

2. Unveil your inner pin-up. Or, at least, learn about the history of pin-up culture in New York City from the early 1900s through today. This session is one of a three-part workshop, which will even include meeting a pin-up model! , Brooklyn Brainery, 515 Court Street, near West 9th Street, 6:30 p.m., $45.

3. Understand your child's educational needs. Wondering whether your school is delivering the best education for your child? This lecture is for you. Peg Tyre, author of The Good School: How Smart Parents Get their Kids the Education they Deserve,  about assessing options and enhancing your child's learning. 4. Find out if your train is running ... The F and G trains will be skipping Smith-9th St, 15th St-Prospect Park and Fort Hamilton Parkway, per usual. Jamaica-bound F trains will run via the M from 47-50 Streets to Roosevelt Avenue. Coney Island-bound F trains run via A the from W 4 St to Jay St-MetroTech, according to the MTA

5. ... And if you have to move your car. Yes. Alternate side parking is being observed, according to the NYCDOT.
