5 Things: Navy Yard Tours, Brooklyn Kids Rock

What you need to know, pre-coffee.

1. Brush up on local history. The Brooklyn Navy Yard's tour schedule changes this weekend to every Saturday and Sunday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Those who board the tour bus will get a closer look at the Yard’s most intriguing sites, including a dry dock that’s been used since before the Civil War, the 24-acre former naval hospital annex that is virtually frozen in time and the nation’s first multi-story LEED Gold-certified industrial building. Oral history clips and historical photographs as well as stories of companies in the Yard today will also be included on this tour. Admission is $30. A percentage of all sales goes to support BLDG 92: the Visitor and Exhibition Center.

2. Move it. Bring the kids to a class at the Art Creators Academy, a new performing arts center. Instructors are seasoned performers and educators with credits from Tony award-winning Broadway shows, and Emmy award-winning T.V. and film. Ages range from 3 to 18. Classes take place Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 143 Waverly Avenue. Click here for class and pricing information.
