5 Things: Mark Bittman Discusses The Future of Food at Fundraiser

1. Book Signing Event with Earl Monroe and Quincy Troupe, authors of Earl the Pearl: My Story. Basketball Hall of Famer Earl “The Pearl” Monroe is a sports superstar whose flair and impact on the game transcends statistics. His game was the perfect combination of athletic ability and showmanship, and his personal life proved just as unpredictable as his style of play. Now, 40 years after helping lead the New York Knicks to their last NBA title, the player known as “Black Magic” tells his amazing story. Earl the Pearl: My Story was written with an able assist by Quincy Troupe (author of The Pursuit of Happyness), and takes Monroe from the playgrounds and hardships of his childhood in South Philadelphia to his status as a basketball legend. Greenlight Bookstore; admission is free but seating is limited; please arrive early.
2. What is a Doula and Why Should You Hire One? Seasoned birth and postpartum doulas Mollie Michel and Meema Spadola will be on hand to answer all of your questions about doula support and explain the ins and outs of birth and postpartum support as well as their specific techniques for working with moms through their journey into motherhood. Drinks and light fare will be provided.
4. Benefit for the Brooklyn Food Coalition. Cooking and food policy columnist for The New York Times Mark Bittman will be speaking in Long Island University's Schwartz Athletic Center (formerly the Paramount Theatre) at 6 p.m. to benefit the Brooklyn Food Coalition. Tickets are $20; $175 VIP Dinner tickets include a 4-course meal, wine, a signed copy of Bittman’s new book, and entry to the talk.
