Skaters turned out in full force for , the opening of what is slated to become a full skateboarding plaza within the next several years. Organized by the Friends of Thomas Greene Park, the day's events included a skate competition, free instruction for novice skateboarders, as well as music and t-shirt silk screening for the younger kids.

The event ws held to raise funds for the park, which has already received sponsorship and support from the Tony Hawk Foundation and local skate shops. The Park recently saw its future , but funds are stil needed to improve the park, which many consider to be under-utilized.

The skateboarding plaza is but one element. Also in the plans: more trees, a new swimming pool, handball courts and a lawn for enjoying the summer sun.

The hope is that the skate plaza, when completed, will not only be a great place for skateboarders in Brooklyn to congregate, but will draw people to the neighborhood by being the premier skate park in the city.
