Two New Businesses Bring Desserts To Your Door

The Baking Bean and Daly Pie are here to serve you sweets.

You've already heard of the farm-to-table movement. Consider two local business ventures the beginnings of a new oven-to-stoop métier. The Baking Bean and Daly Pie are both offering baked goods delivered straight to your doorstep.

Launched by executive chef at , Clarice Lam, the well-traveled pastry guru sees The Baking Bean as an outlet to express herself in ways other than cacao.

"I am a very colorful person and I like to make things look like little pieces of art," said Lam over the phone during a brief break from baking. "The Baking Bean allows me to explore some of the flavors I’ve tasted throughout my travels and create things that are less traditional."

To that end she has created an array of cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, croissants and other candies, none of which duplicate what Lam makes for The Chocolate Room. A cinnamon cake with spiced dulce de leche and chocolate buttercream topped with caramel popcorn was inspired by when Lam lived in Mexico. Another custom creation took its cues from profiteroles she ate in France.

Those with a serious sweet tooth will be on sugar high to learn that in addition to individual orders, The Baking Bean is launching a monthly "Dessert Club" that will deliver a new dessert to your door each week for an introductory price of $100 per month. Just don't eat everything in one sitting.

"The peanut butter and jelly s’mores that are featured in the dessert club are so good, I munched 12 of them in a row sitting in front of the TV the other night," admitted Lam, who is confoundingly slim despite snacking on sugary bites all day.

For more homespun offerings, look to Daly Pie, a pie-delivery service launched by former marketing executive and longtime Gowanus resident Meghan Daly this winter.

"I started baking on a whim for friends and family and it became my Zen activity outside of work," said Daly. "When I baked, the world totally melted away—and still does. I realized that it was what I really wanted to spend my time on and I made the leap."

She now carves out her days creating comforting slices of heaven such as a Chocolate Guinness Pie for St. Patricks Day. "I love the beer flavor with the dark chocolate," said Daly. "It's earthy and decadent."

To date, her most popular sellers are the Spicy Hot Chocolate with Cinnamon Whipped Cream and a Port Wine Mulled Pear Pie in a Gruyere Crust. Prices range from $25 to $30 per pie. If you prefer to sample something before an online purchase, Daly Pie operates a kiosk at the Artists and Fleas market in Williamsburg on weekends, with more nearby options to taste coming soon.

"I am in discussion with a few places in surrounding neighborhoods to start selling my pies," Daly shared. "So I hope to have my pies more widely available in the spring. The longterm goal is to have my own brick and mortar pie shop."

How sweet it is.
