5-Year-Old in Critical Condition After Being Hit by Taxi on Hicks Street

Driver unlikely to be charged, police said.

A 5-year-old boy was in critical condition Saturday evening after a taxi struck him on Hicks Street.

According to police, the boy was walking with his parents at the corner of Amity Street when he suddenly ran out into the street just before 5:43 p.m.

He was taken across the street to Long Island College Hospital where he was in critical condition Saturday night.

"It's devastating," said Eileen Cummings, a LICH housekeeper who encountered the family in the emergency room. "The whole hospital is praying for him."

Police do not expect to charge the taxi driver, an NYPD spokesman said.

Area residents were saddened by the news of the accident.

"It's such a tragedy," said Patrick O'Connor, who was out walking with his 2-year-old son. He added that Hicks is a particularly busy street.
